Lisa Andersen

Lisa Andersen is a legend and the inspiration for the Roxy brand. Her feminine style and athleticism laid the foundation for modern women's surfing in the 1990's, and she's still carrying the torch forward as our worldwide ambassador.

Lisa has been in the limelight since 1986, when she racked up over 30 National Scholastic Surfing Association trophies in under a year. Soon after, Lisa learned how to adapt her explosive and progressive free surfing to the hyper competitive ASP World Tour, leading to the amazing four World Championship titles from 1994-1997.

In 1995, Lisa became the first woman to grace the cover of Surfer Magazine, which also named her one of the "25 Most Influential Surfers of all Time." Sports Illustrated also named her one of the "Top Female Athletes of the 20th Century."

Nowadays, Lisa continues to compete from time to time and remains an icon to everyone who surfs - male or female. She is revered as an inspiration and a pioneer who trail-blazed a path for today's generation of professional women surfers.

It’s no secret that the Hawaiian islands are one of our favorite pieces of P A R A D I S E. We feel most at home when we visit and struggle with the concept of returning to our day to day lives when we eventually have to leave.

Imagine then, the incredible week we had on Kauai with one of the largest gatherings of #ROXYgirls to date for our Spring campaign. A magical week of not only soaking up mother natures finest but sharing stories and laughs between a team of incredible women.

With the launch of Lisa Andersen Collection this week, we felt a swell of pride around revisiting some of the stories and moments that kick started ROXY as a brand and changed the surf industry as we know it.

Monthly Mixtape: Lisa Andersen

We couldn’t think of anyone better to be our DJ for this month’s playlist than the one and only, 4x World Champ herself, and boy did she deliver.

We asked Lisa to spin us a mix that gives us a taste for the tour life in the 90s and it’s definitely the lineup of your dreams, including Madonna, Talking Heads, INXS and The Cure.

Tune in, take a listen and let this hand picked mix be the soundtrack to your weekend.

There isn’t much we can say about 4x World Champ, Lisa Andersen that hasn’t already been said. With the launch of her collection - inspired by pieces Lisa originally wore in the 90s - we felt the best people to describe the legend were the people who were influenced by Lisa the most, the ROXY team.

Bruna

“Lisa has always been a massive inspiration in my life growing up. I was invited for Lisa Champ Camp in Hawaii back in 2003 when I was 13 years old. I didn't speak a word of English, and to this day don’t really know how I got there, but I look back at those memories and realize how that trip had a huge influence on how my future turned out. Lisa opened the doors for so many of us to explore our potential to make new friends and to know that age is just a number. She is still rocking the world!!!”

Lee-Ann

Growing up my mum and dad would always tell me stories about the tour and competitions, and sometimes they'd talk about Lisa and how much she ripped. When I struggled to make good results in my first contests they would tell me that it took Lisa a while to get in the contest groove when she was younger too, and that inspired me to keep trying. Needless to say she was one of my favorite surfers growing up. I got her book "Fearlessness" for my birthday and would watch her edits in surf movies on repeat. I liked her raw, spontaneous approach that was also very subtle and stylish at the same time. When I was 17 I won a junior comp in Huntington Beach and there was a party at her house afterwards. I think that’s the first time I properly met her in person. That day was really cool for me because that's when I met a lot of my favorite surfers and got a grasp of how much fun it was going to be to go on trips with them.

Lisa has always been a huge inspiration to my sister and I. We had a huge autographed poster of her hanging in our room growing up, and even now it's on the wall of my sister’s college dorm room. Lisa was, and will always be, an amazing role model to look up to as a female surfer. Her innovative surfing, her fearlessness, and her love for the sport paved the way for us all.

I'll never forget what Lisa did for me on my first year on the Gold Coast. After seeing that I was riding an old board on the verge of breaking, she gave me one of her own boards to keep. I couldn't believe it, it was completely unexpected and so kind of her. Every Snapper session on that board was magic. It's one of the best boards I've ever had and will definitely remain a favorite of mine for a long time to come.

MAMA LISA!

I was just a little beach rat from Waikiki and I was a obsessed with ROXY practically from the day I was born! I wanted to eat, breathe and live EXACTLY like a ROXY girl. Lisa, she was the QUEEEEEEN Of it all!

My first memory of actually hanging with Lisa, I was probably 13 or 14 years old. My family and I were in San Clemente California for the NSSA nationals and I had been riding for ROXY for about 2 years. It was down to the last day of the event and my Mom told me that Lisa was coming down to watch me. I was so freaked out. Sure enough, she came, and I was like whoa!!!! Lisa Andersen is at NSSA nationals to watch me surf! Not only did she watch, but she sat with me and my family and before my heat, gave me a few little tips before I paddled out and was there when I got back to the beach. I felt like the coolest little cat because Lisa was in MY corner.

Since that day forward I've watched Lisa treat every little frothy grom with the same soft, kind spirit as she did with me. And I still see little frothy groms look at Lisa with the same googoo eyes as I had that day at NSSA nationals. She's the Queen, it's plain and simple! Thanks for pioneering what a true champion, who strides with style and grace, looks like Mama Lisa! We love you!

Monyca

One of my most memorable experiences with Lisa was my very first surf trip with ROXY. We got to go to Mexico together (my favorite place in the world to take a surf trip.) She was so kind, helpful, and humble in the water. She had me try her board and gave me tips right away. My starstruck feeling for her quickly changed to friendship. I ❤️ Lisa!!!!

Bianca

When I think of lisa the first thought that jumps to mind is her sincerity. In a surrounding saturated in superficiality, Lisa has few words, and hides from attention. But when you catch her eye from the corner of the room, or in the line up, her sincerity breaks the barriers of achievement, status or any other obstacle. I look up to the person in the reflection of the trophy, she sparkles brighter.

Lisa Andersen Collection

This week we threw a little soiree at our Quiksilver store in Laguna Beach in California to celebrate the launch of Lisa Andersen’s collection of pieces that draw from the 90s designs at the very beginning of the ROXY brand.

On arrival, guests were greeted by the 4x World Champ and a curated selection of treasured memorabilia including, Lisa’s championship trophies, iconic photographs and framed original swim pieces from the early nineties.

The evening gave us a chance to bring together some of our favorite friends of the brand, old and new, including Randy Hild, Circe Wallace, Bruna Schmitz, Annette, Roxy and Kristi McKnight. As well as media from The inertia, Shop Eat Surf, Orange Coast Magazine, Coast Magazine, Love Sweat Fitness and Beach Grit.

With the #ROXYpro on hold for the boys to complete a few rounds at the #QuikPro, we decided to escape the craziness of Coolangatta for the morning and take a day trip further down the coast for a few uncrowded waves and some downtime with the team.

Cooling off in Cabarita during the #ROXYpro

Our strike mission began early with Mainei, Bruna, Lisa, Bianca and Lee-Ann strapping boards and packing cars with all the essentials before 6am, and after a quick coffee stop, we were fueled up and ready to hit the highway.

It didn’t take us long to feel like we were miles away from the hustle and bustle of Coolangatta, with the urban sprawl slowly melting into the coastal rainforest lining the highway.

In no time we were parked at the Cabarita headland and taking in the uninterrupted views along the dramatic rocky coastline of the morning surf conditions. After a quick decision as to where we would make our camp for the morning, we promptly unpacked the cars and set off down the beach.

Lee-Ann and Bianca were the first ones to hit the water, carefully selecting their weapon of choice from our collective quiver (naturally, we packed for all conditions), with Bruna close behind. The girls were spoiled with an empty line up to share and wasted no time in giving passers by a reason to stop and watch their enviable skills.

As the girls started to come back in from the surf, the subject soon turned to lunch and where to find it. We took a short walk from the beach and stumbled across a sushi bar that seemed to answer everyone’s cravings.

Within minutes of devouring a few hand rolls and gyoza, we were told that the perfect spot to relax on a sunny day in Cabarita was Halcyon House, and given it was just a five minute walk away, we just couldn’t resist.

A refreshing spritzer and plenty of laughs later, we decided to pack up the cars again and head back to Snapper Rocks, just in time to catch Steph set the super bank on fire, catching four barrels in one heat.

Tune in to the dawn patrol show tomorrow morning from 7am AEDT call, for all the finals day action (fingers crossed!)

We couldn’t think of a better coach for the team riders preparing for the #ROXYpro trials and a new year on the competition circuit, than 4x World Champion, Lisa Andersen. From technique to tactics and everything in between, Lisa gave Alyssa, Caroline, Nao, Mainei and Sierra a few secrets to her success that might give them the winning edge in the line-up.

Round 2 resumed this morning at the #ROXYpro France, with 6x World Champ Stephanie Gilmore facing off against Hawaiian, Malia Manuel.

After a slow start, Steph tucked into a clean barrel and scored the highest wave score of the afternoon with an 8.83.

It came down to a close finish in the final minutes of the heat, Steph taking the win and progressing to Round 3 with a 13.50 to Malia’s 13.40

Heat 2: Courtney Conlogue VS Stephanie Gilmore VS Coco Ho

Heat 3: Carissa Moore VS Nikki Van Dijk VS Alessa Quizon

Steph has had an epic cheer squad on the beach this week, with the ROXY surf and snow teams cheering her on through the first rounds of competition. Although the girls have had a busy schedule of signing sessions, event hangs, photo shoots, there has still been plenty of time to share the stoke and a whole lotta laughs in between.

After a string of lay days, the #ROXYpro kicked off yesterday in pumping Hawaiian-style conditions at Les Culs Nus beach, near Hossegor. The girls made the most of the epic swell, scoring barrel rides and the first perfect 10 of the competition.

If you missed any of the action, here are our highlights -

Day 1 of the #ROXYpro France

Heat one opened with a bang! Tour rookie; Tatiana Weston-Webb claimed the day’s standout performance against Bianca Buitendag and fellow Hawaiian Alessa Quizon, getting pitted in a beautiful set wave barrel and scoring the first perfect 10 of the comp.

The beach was buzzing in the lead up to heat 4, as 6x World Champion Stephanie Gilmore pulled on a comp jersey for the first time since April, at the Margaret River pro. With a tough match up against World number 2, Carissa Moore, Steph struggled to match Carissa’s momentum, coming away with a 12.66 to Moore’s 18.77.

Today we brought our global #RUNSUPYOGA global tour to Surf City, Huntington Beach. Over 1000 women joined us to celebrate living an active outdoor lifestyle and 25 years of ROXY. Hosted by World Champs Lisa Andersen and Stephanie Gilmore, #RUNSUPYOGA took over the beach where participants inspired each other to paddle, run and stretch under the Southern California sun.

The event began with a 1K stand-up paddle in perfect mellow swell conditions. Shortly after, participants laced up their trainers for a 5K run along the beach and down the iconic boardwalk.

The day wrapped up with a relaxing yoga session, guided by celebrity fitness trainer Elise Joan. With the sand as our studio, participants took some time out to stretch and reflect on another epic day sharing the #ROXYfitness stoke with over a thousand new friends.

“Every morning you come down here by the water and there’s so many girls exercising. It’s the perfect place to have an event like this.” said Gilmore. “#RUNSUPYOGA is about encouraging girls to challenge themselves physically and get out there in the surf, on land, doing yoga, being active and healthy and incorporating that into your daily life.”
